A pair of Levi's from the 1880s recently sold for $76,000 at auction. They were discovered in an old mine and could be worn 'to get a Starbucks,' according to a vintage expert.

Digital Desk: Kyle Haupert, a 23-year-old San Diego vintage clothing dealer, purchased the pants at an auction on October 1.

"I'm still kind of perplexed, just amazed at myself for buying them," Haupert told the Journal. According to the Journal, he purchased the jeans with Zip Stevenson, the owner of the vintage clothing company Denim Doctors. Haupert paid for 90% of the winning bid and is hoping that Stevenson, who is more experienced, can help find the next buyer for the jeans. The total cost of the pants, including the buyer's premium, was $87,400.

Haupert documented the auction and the pair of prized denim on the Golden State Vintage Instagram account.

"These speak for themselves," Haupert wrote on the jeans' Instagram post.

According to Long John, a denim magazine that first reported the winning bid, the antique jeans were discovered in an old mine years ago. They were worn by a miner and had suspender buttons on the waistbands as well as one back pocket. Candle wax has left its mark on the pants.

According to their auction listing, the jeans are "the holy grail of vintage denim collecting" and one of the oldest known Levis from the gold rush era. According to the listing, the pants are in "good/wearable" condition.

"You could go to Starbucks in them," Stevenson told the Journal.

Haupert did not respond immediately to Insider's request for comment sent after regular business hours.
