Digital Desk: The first phase of Panchayat polls in Assam ended at 4:30 PM on Friday, May 2, with overall voter turnout recorded at 3:30 PM was 56.41%.

The voting procedure began at 7:30 AM in 14 districts of Upper Assam and Barak Valley.

The polling in the first phase took place in Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. 

In the first phase, the polling process was held for 216 zilla parishads, 91 anchalik panchayats, and 1,139 gaon panchayats.

A total of 12,916 polling stations were established across various places for the first phase of elections.

Despite various security measures to ensure a swift voting process across the selected regions, several incidents of violence were reported in the state, including in Cachar, Sribhumi, and Sonitpur.

The second phase of the elections will be held on May 7 in the districts of Dhubri, South Salmara, Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup (Rural), Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.

Over 1.80 crore voters will cast their votes in the ongoing Panchayat elections 2025, scheduled to take place in two phases. 

The counting of votes for the elections will take place on May 11.
