Digital Desk: On Monday, as part of a major change, the Indian National Congress replaced Bhupen Kumar Borah as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) with Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi. The change is a sign that the party is looking to expand its voter base and take back the political importance it had in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
People consider Gaurav Gogoi, the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who follows in his father’s footsteps, to have good grassroots support and strong leadership. This new appointment is seen as a way for Congress to give itself a fresh start in Assam, as it tries to take on the BJP.
Besides Gogoi’s promotion, the Congress top leadership appointed three new Working Presidents to help support Gogoi in both party organisation and grassroots mobilisation: Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey and Pradip Sarkar. Roselina Tirkey has announced she will resign as AICC Secretary to take on duties within the APCC.
The party appreciated outgoing president Bhupen Kumar Borah for all he has done for the party during his time in office. Borah will still have a major say, as he is the new Chairman of the Campaign Committee.

These new appointments which are effective right now, are a result of planning for both age and experience. It is expected that they will bring life to the local Congress organisation and inspire its plans for the Assam battle which is quickly heating up.
