For all his immature actions, there was one statement made by President Donald Trump that we can agree with. The heinous acts of opening fire on unarmed, innocent civilians portray a deep-rooted mental health problem, a problem that reflects on the inadequate upbringing of a child.

Digital DeskAn eighteen-year-old boy carried a firearm to his school in Jacobpura, Gurgaon putting 600 other school children in impending danger.

What is more disturbing is that he brought the firearm to school to show it off to his mates..

While the boy and his friend from whom he took the gun have been arrested, this new anomaly in violence troubling our schools and putting our children in distress seems only to be gaining momentum.

The previous month, a similar incident occurred when a teenager, aged about 17, walked into the principal’s office in Swami Vivekananda School in Yamuna Nagar and shot her three times. A few hours later, the principal died in a private hospital. The principal refused to accept his late project report submission following his record of dropping class attendance due to which the boy got angry and shot her dead.

A recent report estimated the number of firearms in the hands of Indian civilians to be as many as 40 million, of which only 6.3 million are registered weapons.

The news of Ponty Chadha, the liquor baron, being gunned down at his family farmhouse near New Delhi by his brother did the rounds a few months ago or that of Jessica Lal, Pramod Mahajan, Journalist Jyotirmey Dey and Gulshan Kumar, and a few prominent victims.

When this problem crosses the entrance of schools where our children are supposed to be safe - a second home away from home, there is nothing to feel except heartbroken and helpless.

India needs to introduce stricter punishments for owning firearms illegally. In present time, our laws are lenient for illegal possession. Still, this July, the Indian Cabinet has ordered that a verification report has to be looked for by the police before issuing gun licenses. While the debate on both sides of the gun ownership fence is strong, there is no contest that an increased number of firearms in the hands of civilians can only lead to more life threatening danger.

We cannot be inattentive when teenagers are waving around guns in their classrooms instead of tiffin boxes. The matter needs immediate attention and solutions needed to be found out as soon as possible.
