Guwahati: International Youth Day: In 1999, the United Nations decided to commemorate August 12 as the International Youth Day after the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation by the 'World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth.' On this day, governments and citizens across the world come together to bring attention to the problems faced by the youth.
Every year, the theme is decided by the United Nations, a theme that is relevant to all global communities and citizens, and this year's theme is, ‘Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.’
Youngsters are on the frontline to build a better future for all. Solutions developed by young innovators, to address challenges to our food systems, cannot be done on their own. They need allies to make sure they are engaged, included, and understood, said António Guterres, UN Secretary-General. Guterres urged everyone "to guarantee young people a seat at the table as we build a world based on inclusive, fair, and sustainable development for all".
Due to the ongoing pandemic situation around the world because of the coronavirus, the UN will celebrate youth day virtually, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the world body and the major group for children and youth. The world body today on its website said that this year’s International Youth Day aims to provide a platform for the young generation, to continue the momentum from the European Youth Foundation in the lead-up to the high-level Food Systems Summit through youth education, engagement, innovation, and entrepreneurial solutions.
