Digital Desk: The recent revelations from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have shed light on a horrific incident during the ethnic violence in Manipur's Kangpokpi district.

According to the CBI charge sheet, Manipur Police personnel are alleged to have betrayed two women seeking refuge, driving them into the hands of a mob of around 1,000 Meiti rioters.

The charge sheet paints a grim picture of the incident, detailing how the two women, both from the Kuki-Zomi community, were stripped naked and paraded before being subjected to sexual assault amidst the chaos of the ethnic violence. Despite desperate pleas for help, including from the wife of a Kargil war veteran, the police personnel purportedly offered no assistance, claiming they had no key to their official vehicle.

The incident, which occurred on May 4, 2023, gained widespread attention after a video showing the horrifying ordeal of the women went viral in July of the same year. In response to the unrest, the CBI swiftly took action, filing a charge sheet against six accused individuals and initiating proceedings against one juvenile offender.

The charge sheet also highlights the harrowing circumstances faced by the victims, who attempted to flee from the armed mob numbering nearly 1,000 individuals. Despite seeking refuge in the vehicle where two police personnel and a driver were present, the victims received no aid, according to the CBI's findings.

These disturbing revelations underscore the urgent need for accountability and justice in cases of violence and abuse. The CBI's investigation serves as a crucial step towards holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their background or community affiliation.
