Chief Minister Sangma emphasised the importance of technology in waste management, citing successful implementations at other sites within the region

Digital Desk: Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with PHE Minister Marcuise Marak and Chairman of MUDA, Wailadmiki Shylla, recently inspected the progress of the waste segregation machine installation at Rongkhon Songgital in Tura, West Garo Hills on Monday.

The state-of-the-art machine aims to revolutionise waste management by sorting legacy waste into three distinct categories: organic/soiled fraction, combustible, and inert waste. Once operational, loaders and excavators will excavate the legacy waste from the landfill site.

Chief Minister Sangma emphasised the importance of technology in waste management, citing successful implementations at other sites within the region. He expressed optimism in resolving waste management issues in other towns across the state through similar technological interventions.

In addition to addressing legacy waste concerns, the government has mandated waste segregation at household and community levels across all municipalities in the state for improved waste management practices in the future.

"The legacy waste at Rongkhon Songgital has posed challenges for Tura residents. We anticipate significant resolution once the project is operational," Chief Minister Sangma stated, projecting the project's completion within the next few months, with waste management operations set to commence within a year.

Responding to queries about energy block production from waste, Sangma noted previous unsuccessful attempts and outlined the new approach of segregating and selling different types of waste, including plastics, while emphasizing compost creation from biodegradable waste.
