Pornography is immemorial since ages, now with the pandemic situation due to coronavirus, lockdowns have been imposed in almost the entire country, social distancing being the main factor of safety, many people are finding instant pleasure in adult content. A number of children surfing adult and porn sites have found a spike, shows in the recent survey. The main reason for this is being, covid-19, school’s colleges are closed in the entire country, which gives students more free time to surf, due to the easy access they have to adult websites because they have been given devices for their online classes.
India ranks third in the world after America and Britain, in terms of consuming pornography content. “Banning of existing porn sites has encouraged players in the field to develop newer URLs with easier access. So when a child types anything with a keyword addressed to a porn content, the user is directed to a regional pornographic site, which attracts the user even more because they are in regional languages,” “Also, as regards the Internet in India today, three vital things are amiss: anonymity, privacy, and trust. So what could a ban on pornography do? Banning will certainly not make sense,” Ritesh Bhatia, a cybercrime investigator.
In the very recent case of Raj Kundra, the husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty was arrested on charges of making and selling of pornography. Kundra’s app hotshots, presently owned by a UK firm, which actually belong to Raj’s brother-in-law, is the place or app for which he films porn and sells it in a huge amount. Raj Kundra, arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai, earned more than Rs 1.17 crore between August and December last year from his online business of porn films. The Mumbai Crime Branch has found the details of revenue and payments of the Hotshot app on Tuesday. During his hearing at the court, polices gave pieces of evidence about how Kundra had planned to sell 119 adult films to a person to earn USD 1.2 million. Kundra’s both bank accounts have already been frozen by the police. Women were forced and threatened by Raj Kundra to shoot adult film content with the promise of money and work in the film industry. Some people this to be a forceful rape (that is without the constant of the woman). As per the report, the women were lured with money during the lockdown phase as they were struggling to find jobs.
In India, many porn websites are banned on popular networks including the networks run by Jio and Airtel. In August 2015, the government has unsuccessfully tried to block about 857 websites that promote sexual items. This step was taken after the high court of Uttarakhand said that rapes happen because of this online content. But it’s practically impossible to stop Indians from consuming porn content. Sites like Xvideos and Pornhub are banned, even though they seemingly look like regular legal porn sites. So, it is unclear if watching porn can lead you to Jail or not.
“There are no laws against pornography in India and watching adult content privately,” said Corey Price, vice-president at Pornhub. “It’s evident that the Indian government does not have a solution to a very serious and systemic problem in the country, and is using adult sites like ours as a scapegoat. For the government to ban sites like ours that have compliant parental controls, a non-consensual takedown page, and strict terms of service is a disservice to the people of India, who have become one of the largest connoisseurs of adult content.”
A recently married couple, 29-year-old IT employee Siddharth says he often forces himself on his wife. Though Siddharth knew he was committing marital rape, he could not understand the cause for the same. Finally, he took the help of a psychologist who explained to him the reason for his behaviour about sexual needs, it was the addiction to pornography. Psychologists easily resolved his behaviour, but there are several other cases of sexual aggression being fuelled by porn.
While access to online porn is rising, experts say it is not clear whether sexual harassment, abuse, and assault among young people is similarly increasing as may be expected from a simple link between the two.
