Digital Desk: The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of a G20 Secretariat and associated reporting structures on Wednesday. The G20 Secretariat would implement overall policy choices and arrangements for India's next G20 presidency.
From December 1, 2022, until November 30, 2023, India will serve the Presidency of G20, culminating in the G20 Summit in India in 2023.
The G20 is an important platform for international economic cooperation and global economic governance.
"As per practice, a G20 Secretariat is being established to handle work relating to substantive/knowledge/content, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India's G20 Presidency," an official release said.
The G20 Secretariat will enable India's leadership on global issues at multilateral fora to develop long-term capability, including knowledge and skills." the release added.
Officers and personnel from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, other key line ministries and departments, and subject knowledge experts will staff the secretariat. The secretariat will operate until February 2024.
To provide overall guidance to India's G20 Presidency, the secretariat will be guided by an Apex Committee headed by the Prime Minister and consisting of the Finance Minister, Home Minister, External Affairs Minister, and G20 Sherpa (Commerce, Industry, Textiles, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister).
In addition, a coordination committee will be formed to oversee all G20 preparations and provide recommendations to the Apex Committee.
