Digital Desk: Saroj Khan, a well-known Bollywood choreographer, died of heart arrest on July 17, 2020, at the age of 71. She told why she converted to Islam after quitting the Hindu religion in an interview with a TV programme. Saroj Khan said her name was Saroj Kishan Chand Singh Nagpal and claimed she was a Hindu. Her ancestors were Sindhi Punjabis. The choreographer recalled meeting her spouse (Roshan Khan) and falling in love after she converted to Islam. She added, however, that she changed not out of love, but because she admired Islam. She mentioned that she had seen tiny children pray, which she did not witness in Hinduism. Many people inquired if she was under any pressure, but she stated flatly that she was not. Saroj Khan said “I see dreams… I lost a baby girl… In my dreams she used to come and call me from inside the mosque, pleading ‘Mummy please come inside, come inside’.” Saroj Khan was born in the state of Bombay on November 22, 1948. She began her career as a child artist when she was three years old, and subsequently worked as a background dancer in the late 1950s. She married B. Sohanlal, her guru and dancing director, when she was barely 13 years old. At the age of 14, she gave birth to her first child. She and Sohanlal had split up in 1965, but they rejoined after he had a heart attack. She then had her second child, Hina Khan, but she died after only eight months. Saroj Khan eventually married Sardar Roshan Khan, a Pathan, in 1975, who was prepared to accept her children and give them his name. She had said “He turned out to be Godsend, and I haven’t regretted my decision to date. He gave me a lot of love and his first wife and I live like sisters today. You accept a lot when you love a man.”
